Jonathan Houlding is a London-based BAFTA-winning Production Designer whose work spans film, television and immersive storytelling. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, he brings an extensive knowledge of architecture, art and design to film, combining visual imagination with a deep understanding of space, material and narrative.

Houlding began working in film in 1996, developing a career across production design and art direction, from the earliest stages of concept and visual development through to construction, shooting and final frame. His Production Design credits include The Riders, Ballad of a Small Player and Save the Cinema, while his Art Direction credits include Poor Things, The Martian, Exodus: Gods and Kings and Band of Brothers.

He has collaborated with filmmakers including Edward Berger, Sir Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Yorgos Lanthimos, Kenneth Branagh and Neil Jordan, working across contemporary drama, historical worlds, science fiction and highly stylised cinematic environments.

In 2003, Houlding stepped away from film for seven years to pursue an independent practice in the visual arts. During this period he exhibited as an artist internationally, worked as an independent curator and taught fine art at leading universities. He also co-directed an Arts Council-funded public arts space exploring the critical and contested territory of ‘installation’.

He returned to film in 2010, bringing with him a deeper understanding of contemporary art, spatial practice and the relationship between objects, architecture and audience. He combines traditional drawing and visual development with digital design, physical production, VFX and virtual production, allowing ideas to move seamlessly from conception to the finished image.

His work has been recognised with BAFTA and Art Directors Guild awards, alongside numerous international honours for his design of commercials. His artwork has been exhibited internationally and is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the British Council and other major institutions.
